Young people have a brand-new vibrant space to enjoy activities and events as the Geraldton Youth Centre officially opens its doors.

Set to create a stronger sense of belonging and connection to community for local youth, the Centre will be dedicated to diversionary sports, recreation activities, art, leadership opportunities, community events and more.

ҹɫè Mayor Jerry Clune said the refurbished space had been customised for a range of programming.

“Located perfectly in our Wonthella Sporting Precinct, the newly opened Geraldton Youth Centre provides a dedicated place for our local youngsters to enjoy a wide range of activities,” he said.

“Our goal is to foster a dynamic environment that supports youth development and community-based initiatives, in alignment with the City's current Youth Strategy.

“It also supports our School Holiday Program, which we have been facilitating for many years, by giving us a dedicated place to host our activities.

“We thank Lotterywest for their support to help us deliver important services to our community,” Mayor Clune added.

The $1.5 million project was joint funded with a Lotterywest grant of $954,221 and the City contributing the remaining to purchase the building for $570,000 which was formerly Club Rocky’s gym.

The project builds on activation in Wonthella being close to the PCYC, Wonthella Skate Park, Geraldton Aquarena and various sporting grounds.

Hon Sandra Carr, Member of Legislative Council said the new Centre would enhance community wellbeing.

“My heartfelt congratulations to the ҹɫè in establishing this fantastic new Youth Centre for young people in our region,” she said.

“The Centre is thoughtfully established, being well-located amongst other youth facilities in the area, and allows the City to extend its offerings to positively engage young people in our community, allowing them to feel both welcomed and valued.

“It is encouraging to see the City proactively working with local youth to enhance whole community inclusiveness and wellbeing.”

The extensive refurbishment works were undertaken by local contractor Geraldton Building Services and Cabinets.

The Centre now boasts a multi-use sports court with spectator area and a multi-functional space for activities such as workshops, presentations and meetings.

The newly opened Geraldton Youth Centre falls under the Connected theme of the Strategic Community Plan which reflects the organisation’s commitment to celebrating the community through programs that build social connections.

The Geraldton Youth Centre is located at 103 Pass Street. Details regarding activities and events hosted at the Centre can be found on the City’s website.
